Improving communication and collaboration in a team

How well a team works together depends on how it communicates: how information is shared, how decisions are made, how feedback is given and how conflicts are resolved. Where shared rules for this are missing, it costs time and leads to misunderstandings.

We teach methods for communication and collaboration and help teams set their own rules for them, within the team and across team boundaries.

Starting point

Typical starting points.

  • Meetings run long and end without a decision.

  • Information gets lost between chat, email and meetings.

  • Conflicts are only raised once they escalate.

  • At the interfaces between teams, departments or locations there are regular misunderstandings and delays.

  • Problems are raised late because no one wants to deliver bad news.

Our approach

What we change together.

  • Channels and information.

Which channel is used for what, where information is stored and how quickly a reply is expected.

  • Meetings and decisions.

Every recurring meeting is given a purpose and a clear rule for how decisions are made there, for example by consent: a proposal is considered adopted when no one has a reasoned objection.

  • Feedback and conflicts.

Fixed formats for regular feedback and an agreed procedure for raising conflicts early and objectively.

  • Collaboration across team boundaries.

Clear interfaces between teams and locations: who informs whom, who decides and how handovers work.

Results

What you have afterwards.

  • The team has binding rules on channels, meetings and decisions.

  • Every recurring meeting has a clear purpose, and it is clear which meetings are dropped.

  • There is an agreed procedure for feedback and conflicts.

  • After six weeks, we have reviewed together whether the rules work in everyday practice.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is this communication training?

Not in the classic sense. We do not practise conversation techniques in role play. The team works on situations from its own everyday work and sets rules that apply afterwards.

  • Do you also work with several teams together?

Yes. If the problems arise at the interfaces, we work jointly with the teams involved and establish who informs whom and who decides.

  • Do we need additional software for this?

No. The methods work with your calendar, your chat and the software you already use.
